An optical printer is a motion picture camera that points towards a projector. With this setup you can do more than just cut film. You can freeze frame, zoom in or out, add dissolves and double exposures and reverse, speed up, and slow down time.
Printing with high contrast film creates mattes from your developed film. Film matting techniques are used to create the "green screen" effect, as we call it today. The printer used for this film was in disrepair, leading to some mattes being off center or falling a frame behind. This effect makes it easy to see the layers of film that used to be required for film matting. The final product was filmed frame by frame with no option for playback until developed.
